A crown or 'cap' is a tooth shaped cover that
is made to fit over your teeth. Crowns are usually the preferred
option when a patient has badly chipped or fractured
teeth, or perhaps when there is a tooth that has been
heavily filled but is breaking down. If a tooth
has never formed properly, or is badly discoloured,
a crown may be the best option to restore the tooth
for a natural appearance.
Tooth coloured porcelain, sometimes attached to a
metal inner shell for greater strength, is generally
the most common type of crown used. However, there
are also gold or metal crowns that can be used. Your
dentist will advise you on the most suitable material
for your circumstances.
This procedure will be done over two appointments. The
first appointment to prepare your teeth and take an impression.
A temporary crown can then be placed whilst the permanent
crown is being made. Using the impression, a crown will
be made to fit and this will be cemented in during your
second appointment.
