A bridge is a false tooth which is used to fill the
gap left by a missing real tooth. Although bridges
are often attached to crowns that fit over the teeth
on either side of the gap there are other types requiring
less tooth removal from neighbouring teeth that can
be fitted in areas where there is less stress placed
upon them, such as the front of the mouth. Your dentist
will discuss the best type with you.
The most common bridge will be carried out
over two appointments. The first appointment to prepare
your teeth on either side of the gap. An impression
will then be taken to ensure the bridge will fit exactly
into the gap. Before the end of the appointment,
the dentist will fit a temporary bridge over the prepared
teeth until the permanent bridge is ready. On
your second appointment, your dentist will cement the
permanent bridge firmly in place.
